ICSC's statement re: police brutality and violence.
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Racism and Murder in America
The horrific killing of George Floyd while handcuffed in the custody of the Minneapolis police officer (that kneeled on his neck for at least nine minutes) was nothing short of an act of murder.
As Muslims, we are called by the Quran to unequivocally stand on the side of the oppressed, the poor, and the downtrodden. Whileour Center is planning to host programs and discussions about this issue in the future, the persistence of police brutality and racial violence in our country begs us now to unequivocally condemn it and call for change.
We are avoiding imposing collective guilt and recognize that murders committed by the law enforcement sworn to protect and serve us do not represent the overwhelming majority that serve honorably. However, law enforcement agencies across the nation must engage in genuine and systemic reforms. These reforms include, but are not limited to, providing better tactical and de-escalation training for officers, implementing community policing, and creating police forces that protect and serve justly. We call for a proper investigation and accountably for those responsible for the murder of George Floyd.
The Islamic Center of Southern California prays for the victims of police violence and brutality. We pray God envelopes the families who have lost loved ones with comfort and brings them justice. May we be among those who strive to move our country towards justice and its promise of "liberty and justice for all."
May God guide us all as we strive only in His cause.
