Community Precautions and Coronavirus

Assalamu Alaikum,

By now you have heard of the Coronavirus contagion (officially “Covid-19”) and its impact on nations and communities around the world.  The virus starts off with cold and flu like symptoms, and then may rapidly worsen from there.  It is airborne transmitted.  The sick, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are most susceptible.

Here in the United States, our Centers for Disease Control stated on February 26th they expect the virus to make its way to our country.  Orange County and San Francisco County have declared states of emergency in anticipation of the virus hitting, and ensuring resources are available.

Los Angeles County has setup a website for this matter which we encourage you to visit and monitor that you can view here.

We at the Islamic Center encourage the community to take extra precautions, and maybe modify some of our social habits during this time.

Alhamdullilah, our community enjoys greeting each other with a handshake, a hug, and a kiss on the cheek.  For the time being, it may be worth avoiding touch and switching to a hand on the heart, a respectful nod, and a warm smile.

IF YOU ARE SICK OR SUSPECT YOU ARE SICK PLEASE AVOID ATTENDING JUMMA PRAYER.  The same applies for children in the New Horizon School system and Sunday School.  This is a good and respectful practice in “normal” times, but especially so under current circumstances.

Let us do our part as Muslims to avoid being the source of any local outbreak and demonstrating a responsible approach in a challenging time.

The Islamic Center continues to monitor the situation and will communicate further as needed.

May God guide us all as we strive only in His cause.

In peace,

Omar Ricci
