Last Sunday, Aug. 13, the Islamic Center of Southern California held a community-wide event that called for all hands on deck: “Mosque Beautification Day!” Many people, as young as six and as old as sixty, worked together to bring polish and shine to our beautiful Islamic Center – purifying our spirits while we cleaned the Center. Volunteers expressed their gratitude for taking part in an event like this, finding value beyond a more tidy space. One sister, Aisha, took a break from her work to share that, “Caring for our mosque is a blessing. This is God’s home and it is a privilege to be the one maintaining it.”

We had our pails of water and wash rags to scrub all the chairs, tables, and even the bleachers outside on the black top. In the front of the Center, we planted an array of beautiful flora including succulents of varying sizes, shapes, and colors to bring new life to the front of our building. The men, women, and children from our community, along with members of our board and staff, made our Center cleaner, brighter, and more warmly inviting.

“Caring for our mosque is a blessing. This is God’s home and it is a privilege to be the one maintaining it.” (Aisha, Mosque Beautification Volunteer)

To end our day of hard work, we shared a meal together, and enjoyed the fruits of our labor. Come to see what you, our loving community, did to make our center feel even more at home. Don’t be surprised when the flowers bring a smile to your face!
